We are so glad you dropped by. We believe God has invited us into the ministry of Jesus, The Christ - to share his love with anyone and everyone; our Communion table (church) is God’s table – and all who seek a loving relationship with God through Jesus Christ are welcome here.
At La Vernia UMC, we are here to serve all of humanity – from the cradle to the rocking chair, we find that all are in need of God’s Grace. We currently have 623 members, with a combined average worship attendance of about 275, in a small town of 931. We serve a parish area of 15 mile radius with a population of 75,000 plus. We have 40 plus ministries which serve the congregation, community and beyond. We have a Child Care Ministry with 140 + children and a CrossFire Student Ministry with 70 -80 youth on Wednesday evenings. We have a Aging Gracefully Ministry with 50 + senior citizens on Wednesday mornings and lunch. LVUMC is a congregation who loves its pastors and staff and tries to follow Jesus’ command to “love one another as I have loved you.” We know no strangers, only friends we meet for the first time. We invite you to come join us.
Our Mission Statement is:
To Love God, Self and You
Our mission is based on The Great Commandment: Matt 22:37-39 (NKJV) Jesus said to him, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Our Vision Statement is:
To Serve, Share and Offer Christ
Our Vision is based on The Great Commission: Matt 28:19-20 (NKJV) "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

REV. STEPHEN CURRY
I’m Stephen Curry and, as most of you have already heard, I will be appointed pastor here at La Vernia UMC at Annual Conference. My wife and I are looking forward to moving to town and really appreciate the wonderful new parsonage. I have met with Pastor Sharon and the LVUMC staff and will be working with them to make this transition as smooth as possible.
To tell you a little about me, I was born in Dallas but raised in El Paso. I grew up Presbyterian and went to college at Trinity University in San Antonio in 1980 in part because it was related to my church. There is where I met Sharon Miller. I received my Bachelor of Science in 1984 with a double major in Computer Science and Religion (there are no cross-listed courses between those two majors). Sharon and I married in January of 1986 just after she received her Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science. Sharon was from San Antonio and I joined her church, St. Matthew’s UMC, where she has been a member since she was 5 years old.
We both worked at Trinity University for many years. I was in the computing center and she was at the physical plant. Our son was born in 1987. We were very active in St. Matthew’s, particularly with the youth programs. I was Scoutmaster for a while and became involved with the praise and worship team. Sharon worked with the pastors as the Confirmation Class Co-ordinator. She was President of the UMW and I was president of the UM Men. We both attended Emmaus walks. Sharon led a Chrysalis Flight and I almost led an Emmaus walk (we didn’t have enough pilgrims and the walk was canceled a week before it was scheduled). We also became Certified Lay Speakers.
In 2004, God called me to become a pastor and I began the journey into candidacy. My son graduated from high school in 2005 and joined the Army eventually serving two tours in Iraq. I enrolled in Perkins School of Theology (our seminary on the campus of Southern Methodist University). I continued to work at Trinity University to pay for school. Going half time it took twice as long to complete my degree but I never had to borrow money for tuition. During this time, Alan Delafield was appointed to St. Matthew’s and hired me as part time Contemporary Worship Leader.
I left Trinity University last August to serve as an intern at Trinity United Methodist Church as the final requirement of my degree. I graduated with honors on May 18thwith a Masters of Divinity. And now, I am ready to follow God’s call to La Vernia. My first Sunday with you will be June 30th. Between now and then, Sharon and I will be traveling to Fort Knox, Kentucky, to see our son off on his next deployment to Afghanistan.
We are looking forward to becoming a part of La Vernia. Coming to a new church is kind of like jumping into a river – it is already moving. I ask your patience as I learn the customs and traditions that are unique to La Vernia and for your prayers as we make this move from my sponsoring church where we have been for so long. I know, however, that this is the race God has set before us and that His will is always directed for our good. Together we will thank Him for all His gifts, worship Him will all our hearts and minds and voices, and love each other because He first loved us.
Thanks for listening. Adios.
